Lovely morning. Why is it that autumn makes me crave for good coffee and chocolate? I like to travel abroad without a specific goal in mind. Belgium is famous for its chocolate brands such as Godiva and Vitamere, but there are also many good local chocolate shops in different parts of the city. My friends and I would look in the shop windows and if we saw a chocolate shop that looked good, we would go in. The shopkeeper asked us if we would like to try some of the chocolates.
We took our favourite chocolates in a paper bag and got on the train. My friend and I bought some coffee at a coffee stand in the station and got on the train with a group of school children who were going on a field trip. They approached us and we talked to them.
We had a good time, playing games with the playing cards they had with them. They seemed to have learnt about Japan at school and asked us many questions which we answered. The children’s eyes lit up when they heard information about a foreign country that they didn’t know. At our destination, the children got off the train with smiles on their faces and said “See you later”. Afterwards, my friend and I sipped on some cold coffee and tasted some delicious chocolates, and talked about how grateful we were for the unexpected and wonderful encounter on the train.
You never know what will happen when you travel. Some countries don’t speak English. But with my not-so-fluent English, the children’s English, and our desire to express our feelings, we can communicate. In other countries, you never know if the train will come at the exact time as in Japan. It is easier to think that this is the way it is. It’s a moment when you realise how many shackles you have in your mind. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It’s just good to know that there are different ways of thinking, different ways of seeing, different worlds. It’s only when you go out that you realise the beauty of Japan.
There are many different countries, many different people, many different languages, many different ways of thinking. Even if you come across something that is different from your own values, it is important to know and accept it. I don’t know what the right answer is. However, there must be an underlying desire for everyone to be happy. I want to live my life with my own axis firmly in place so that I can see things from different perspectives.
